Description

Purpose and goal: The project aims to investigate the possibility of changing plastic handling in the manufacturing process for advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMP). The goal is to identify opportunities and risks for a future test bed project where fossil plastics are recycled instead of being burned as hazardous waste, using Re:lab AB´s technology for gasification of plastics, thus enabling the reuse of carbon atoms. The study will result in a report and a plan for a larger project for the reuse of plastic in ATMP production, contributing to more sustainable pharmaceutical manufacturing. Expected results and effects: A successful feasibility study, results in a plan for the next, larger demonstration study. If successful, this study, in turn, could have the effect of supporting the transition to circular plastic use in pharmaceutical production processes. Such a solution, when implemented, could have effects on multiple stakeholders in laboratory operations at regional, national, and international levels. The potential scalability of this concept could extend its effect to other industries that use non-recyclable plastic items. Approach and implementation: The project contains 5 work packages to explore the potential of Re:lab AB’s innovative plastic gasification solution for plastic waste from ATMP production. Data is collected at several stages for e.g. waste flow, technical and environmental factors, and safety and quality requirements. The environmental and economic viability of the solution is tested. The initial plan is subsequently validated through an impact analysis of changed routines of waste management within the ATMP process, resulting in the delivery of a comprehensive plan for a subsequent demonstration project.
